Astros Train Baseball Sculptures

As part of a special project honoring the Houston Astros, I contributed to the creation of custom sculptural baseballs that replaced the iconic oranges in the Astros train installation. These oversized balls were crafted using two distinct processes: half were formed using a custom mold made exclusively for the Astros, with each piece built up in layers of fiberglass to create a strong, egg-like shell. The other half were hand-sculpted from scratch, incorporating multiple chemical layering techniques to achieve a durable, dynamic surface.

Each baseball was carefully finished with multiple coats of paint to achieve depth, texture, and realism. I was personally responsible for hand-painting the red stitching on every ball, ensuring precision and consistency across the installation. This project was a unique blend of technical fabrication and detailed artistry, and it was an honor to contribute to a piece so deeply rooted in Houston’s sports culture.
